Transitioning New Grad RNs with Care: The Role of Apprenticeships

Willamette Valley Medical Center (WVMC) has launched a 12-month nurse residency program designed to support newly graduated nurses like Grace Umfleet as they transition into their careers. The program offers personalized training, pairing residents with experienced preceptors for their first 12 weeks and providing ongoing mentorship throughout the year. Unlike shorter residency programs at larger hospitals, WVMC’s approach emphasizes hands-on experience in multiple hospital units, including med/surg, obstetrics, and intensive care. Participants also complete educational modules, attend conferences, and work on capstone projects to improve hospital services.

The initiative aims to enhance nurse confidence, improve patient care, and reduce turnover rates among new hires. WVMC educator Anna Hilts highlighted that while 20-30% of new nurses typically leave within their first year, residency programs help retain 93% of participants. Umfleet, who grew up with nursing influences in her family, appreciates the structured support and has quickly gained confidence in her role. She credits the program for making her transition from nursing school to professional practice smoother and envisions a long-term future at WVMC.
